Taboo Topics in Talking to British

Taboo Topics in Talking to British
What is the favourite topic of conversation for the British? That's right. Time! Because of this, they often become the subject of jokes and even ridicule. But perhaps behind this seemingly boring habit, there is a serious reason. Namely, there are a lot of topics that are taboo when talking to insufficiently close people, so it is always good to start with something neutral.

The History of Britain

The whole name of the State is actually United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It consists of four historically-geographical and ethnic areas - England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Before the unification, each of them has its own history and cultural specifics. In 1707 England and Scotland joined together, and almost 100 years later, Ireland joined in 1801. But part of Ireland left the Union in 1922. the above information, although very brief, is indicative of the fact that all these processes have hardly gone quietly and painlessly. As we said, these are practically four different, although close in culture nations. This certainly leaves a mark on today's culture and the most visible mark of this is taboo on political and religious views. Of course, you can discuss these topics in your close circle of family and friends. But it is considered impolite and generally unacceptable to be curious if you are just meeting someone or your relationship is more business than friendly. Yes, that includes colleagues at work.

Discussion of details of privacy

Whether it's the bad weather or the fact that they live on an isolated island, but the British are known for their closure. This automatically makes sharing personal details taboo topic. This applies not only to questions to a colleague, but also if you decide to share something with him. It's good to know that if you work at a British firm and try to get close to your colleagues. Although we are used to sharing with our colleagues in Bulgaria when it comes to British, just forget about this topic. If you decide to ask for courtesy or concern, your question may be taken as a rude interference in privacy. If you think sharing will break the wall of distance, you are wrong again. The most you can gain is the fame of a strange person who shows off his life in the wrong places. When the British have a personal problem, they consider it acceptable and correct to discuss it with a specialist. Colleague and friendly assistance is not a tribute. After all, this is the home of the phrase "My home is my fortress!" And the British are really guarding this fortress, which is the first wall to surround it is silence.

Solvency and wealth issues

In addition to being an invasion of privacy, this topic should not be commented on other considerations. Comparison of monetary opportunities, especially between colleagues, can lead to unnecessary tensions at work. After all, most people are so set up that they always consider their work and efforts more important and significant than those of others. And the discussion of wages and overall financial wealth can make them feel underappreciated and even give rise to aggression or even more severe conditions such as depression. So avoid prying, and also boast or mourn. The British take the subject very personal and are reluctant to tolerate it.

Questions about success in work and life

It is not more forbidden to boast here if you want to point out your success. However, do it with measure and without unnecessary display only in the context of another topic. But you certainly shouldn't ask your associate any such questions. If you are aware that the person against you has achieved some success, you may express respect and admiration but again measured and carefully. But generally, if you are not convinced that the topic is appropriate avoid it.

Culinary preferences

Here probably every normal Bulgarian will exclaim - Why this too!? Well, because this is Britain. People there are very good and kind. And their story suggests that food can also be an improper topic. Why -- because the country has many colonies. This determines the fact that migration processes have started well before modern globalisation. And this is the first prerequisite for the fact that today it is full of many different people in nationality and nationality. That is, culinary preferences can give away ethnicity and hence lead to conscious or unconscious discrimination. Discrimination may have in relation to the types of food you love, for example - you are a vegetarian, but you are surrounded by total vegans or meat lovers. The recommendation here is - approach the topic carefully.

Topics you can talk to a Britishman about

You probably understand now why when people introduce themselves, they start a conversation about time. It is still neutral territory because whether it is warm, sunny or rainy, you cannot blame any of your companions for it. It is also not part of ethnic, territorial or cultural inter-conflicts, it is not a family or personal problem, success or failure.   In conclusion, let's say that English can help you to talk to people around the world. However, this does not mean that if you end up in Britain, you will definitely fit into the middle immediately.
