The meaning and use of prepositions in German

The meaning and use of prepositions in German
Not once have we said that languages are not just a set of words with certain meanings, but systems with complex connections to the parts in it. So to express ourselves in a certain language, it is not enough simply to know the meanings of a certain number of words in it. In fact, even if we know all the words, if we cannot properly link them in terms, it is almost certain that we will remain misunderstood. And in the role of connecting elements that have different types of relationships, we see the prepositions most often. What is said above applies to every language, but today we will look at more detailed prepositions in German and what is most important to know about them.

The Importance of Prepositions in German

These are those words that, in combination with nouns or pronouns, show  show position, direction, time or way. All prepositions govern one particular maturity. There are also those that can be used at two maturitys. So it is important to pay attention to the verb: - if not a verb for movement the preposition rules Dativ. - if the verb expresses movement, the same preposition governs Akkusativ. Some of the prepositions can be merged with the id member. The following forms are formed, for example:
DAS DEM
an + das = ans an + dem = am
in + das = ins in + dem = im

What prepositions in German exist

We already said they show position, direction, time or place. Most are used in all of the listed cases, so we translate them differently in Bulgarian. We will try to look at some of the most popular prepositions by identifying their most characteristic uses:
  1. Aus - from, iz (for place) - from, for (for a reason) - from (part of whole) - from (direction, movement outside)
  2. Bei - at, to, y; near (place) - during (time of)
  3. Ach. - for, to, to, c, to (for place) - after (for time) - after (order, sequence)
  4. Mit - with, together with (a link between persons or phenomena)
  5. Nach - for, to, to, c, to (for place) - after (order, sequence)

Examples of use

We've seen that some prepositions may have more than one meaning. And that some prepositions have the same meaning as Ach. and Nach. Then why do we need both? The answer is simple - they are used in different cases. Let's look a little bit more closely at the categories of direction and time:
  1. Destination
    • Nach we use to indicate a change in geographical location - in front of continents, countries and cities: Ich fahre NACH Europa/ Deutschland/Berlin.
    • In we use for the male and female countries and plural: Ich fahre IN den Vatikan/die Ukraine/die USA.
    • And... when we point out a direction towards water - seas, rivers, lakes: Ich fahre AN die Nordsee/den See.
    • Zu - when we talk about lively faces: Ich fahre ZU Marta/Onkel. Remember this preposition because except in cases where Nach it can be used as a substitute for other forwards.
  2. Time
    • Um... We talk to him about the parts of the day, the days of the week and the months: am Morgen/Montag/ersten Januar - in the morning/ on Monday/ 1st January
    • I'm for months, annual times and sometimes dates: im September/Sommer/im Jahre 1992 - in all three cases means in
    • Um for hours (exact time): Um 6 Uhr - at 6 hours
    • Gegen - for hours (accurate time): gegen 2 Uhr - about 2 hours
    • In for minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years of importance after or -: in 5 Minuten /16 Tagen - after/ every 5 minutes/ after/ during 16 days
    • Von… bis - of ... to used with days, months, years: von Mittwoch bis Freitag - from Wednesday to Friday
    • Seit - used over the years with a sign from: seit 1999 - from 1999
